Hearing scheduled in lawsuit over $1M lotto ticket

Posted: September 17, 2012 - 8:40am

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) — A judge may weigh in on a number of requests in a legal battle over a $1 million lottery ticket that one Arkansas woman claims she threw away and another says she picked out of the trash.

A pretrial hearing in the case is expected to get under way Tuesday in Searcy.

Sharon Jones claimed the jackpot after she plucked the ticket out of the trash last year. A judge ruled earlier this year that the money should belong to another woman who says she threw the ticket away after a machine told her it wasn't a winner.

That judge later ordered a new trial and said he wouldn't preside over it.

The case is scheduled to go on trial next month.

Jones has asked for a jury trial.

I am not a judge but..

I think the person who turned in the ticket wins the $1 million and the lady who threw it away because of the machine should sue the manufacturer of the faulty machine for the million.

I'm no judge either

But I'm guessing that splitting it 50/50 would have been a better investment than the attorney costs/time from work/etc etc for this "all or nothing" fight.

Really??

"I'm guessing that splitting it 50/50 would have been a better investment than the attorney costs/time from work/etc etc for this "all or nothing" fight."

Do you really think that either side involved in this would have agreed to a 50/50 split? From what I've read, both want 100%. What's even worse, both seem determined that if they can't have it, then they're going to do everything possible to make certain the other doesn't get it either.

Yes, the court is wasting its time entertaining a couple of 2 year olds. :-(

I didn't say that I thought they WOULD....I just said it would have been the better investment.

i_wonder is on the right track

The only ones who are guaranteed to get piles of money from this are the lawyers on both sides.

Was it 1% or 10% or 50%?

Meanwhile, whatever this trial determines will likely be appealed.

So, it will be years before either of them see the money, or whatever is left of it....after costs and taxes are removed.

Kinda sad, making 500k off of a $1 ticket isn't enough to satisfy?
