The Faulkner County 4-H Shooting Sports Club left their mark with their marksmanship and hunting safety skills at the 2012 Arkansas 4-H Shooting Sports Range Events Competition held July 12-15 at the Arkansas 4-H Center in Ferndale. Sixteen 4-H youth, along with numerous certified shooting sports instructors and volunteers, represented Faulkner County at this year’s event. Twelve Faulkner County 4-H members competed in the event’s seven skills areas: .22 pistol, 22 rifle, air pistol, archery, muzzleloader, pellet rifle, and shotgun. This year’s teams were coached by: Kendall Casey, Byron Smith, Darrin Wood, Jeff Jackson, Jeff Riddle, and Sherry Brewer.
Although competition is one of the driving forces behind the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, the main objectives of the Arkansas 4-H Shooting Sports Program are to provide positive youth development opportunities, nurture human growth and development, enhance participants’ self-concept and character through safe, educational, and socially acceptable involvement in shooting activities. The 4-H Shooting Sports program provides an opportunity for kids to learn about firearms in a safe environment and provides an opportunity for youth to show their skills in a competitive setting. Events such as Range Events offer opportunities for youth to exhibit the skills they learn through 4-H – skills important to the youth, not only on the contest range but in preparing for a successful career and personal life.
