Twelve-year-old drowned in flash flood, authorities say

Posted: September 1, 2012 - 7:23pm

Update:

Twelve-year-old Drake Walker was found dead in a pond in west Conway at the close of a one and a half hour search Saturday.

Rescue crews, family and friends began searching for Walker after he went missing while on a walk with a friend in the area of Bay Hill Drive, authorities said.

"The friend and the boy were walking, and the friend said he turned around and the boy was gone," Conway Police Department officer Sean Canady said.

Authorities were notified Walker was missing just before 6 p.m., shortly after a thunderstorm hit the area.

Walker's body was pulled from a pond near the Centennial Valley neighborhood in west Conway by Conway Fire Department's rescue squad at about 7:30 p.m.

"Speculation at the scene was that he was swept through rushing water to the drainage culvert that delivered him to the pond," Canady said.

Canady said the friend who reported Walker missing was unharmed.

Walker was a student at Ruth Doyle Middle School.

Canady said the school's resource officer has been notified, and grief counseling will be made available for students returning to school Tuesday.

"Neighbors, everyone in the area and the community was out searching for the boy within minutes of the call coming out," Canady said.

Police say the boy was lost when the last thunderstorm hit the area.

Conway Officer Sean Canady said the boy was walking with a friend, and when the friend turned around "the boy was gone."

Searchers are using a helicopter, and Conway Fire Department has set up a post in the area near Declaration Road, Canady said.

Dive teams are ready to search a nearby pond and creek, he said.
