Celebrity waiters to fight cancer

Many of us have been touched by cancer. We either are a survivor, know a survivor, know someone who lost their life to cancer or know someone who is battling the disease.

In an effort to combat cancer, Esther McClellan, co-owner of U.S. Pizza Conway, formed a committee in 2011 with the purpose of hosting the first Conway Celebrity Waiter event, which benefited the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“Esther and her amazing group of volunteers have set the bar for the entire state of Arkansas when it comes to putting on an event such as this.

Last year, Conway Celebrity Waiter raised over $22,000. Prior to that, the “record” for a Celebrity Waiter event in Arkansas was $7,500.

The energy and dedication of this group of people are nothing short of amazing,” shared Donna Smith, area staff partner for ACS. 80% of the funds raised for ACS are dedicated to funding life-saving research.

This year, the goal is to increase the amount of money raised while adding to the fun of the event.

Hours of the event have been extended to noon though 10 p.m.

The event encompasses the inside and outside of U.S. Pizza and will kick off with bouncy houses for the kids, music and more at noon. Between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m, the silent auction, which includes a plethora of items, will be open and there will be live music.

During the entire event, Celebrity Waiters will be waiting on tables in hopes of collecting generous tips for the fight against cancer.

“Whether someone can afford to donate $1 or $100, it will make a difference in our community-wide fight against cancer. We are fighting for the lives of those with cancer in our area, and we want to win this battle.” said Kathy Wyrick.

Those who wish to honor a loved one or their business, may purchase luminaries, which will line Front Street. Each luminary will be customized with the person’s name or business name. Visit http://tinyurl.com/Conwayluminaries2012 to purchase luminaries two for $10 or stop by U.S. Pizza for a luminary form for $5 each. There is no limit to the quantity of luminaries one may purchase.

Committee members are also creating chair covers in honor or memory of loved ones. Each chair covers is a $25 donation and will be posted on the back of each of the chairs in the dining area. Forms are available at U.S. Pizza.

The 2012 list of celebrity waiters includes cancer survivors, a dad who lost his daughter to cancer, those who have lost loved ones to cancer and more. Each person has their personal reason for fighting cancer.

To support your favorite waiter in this very worthy cause, visit uspizzaconway.com and contribute via the waiter’s name. Donations may also be dropped off at U.S.Pizza Conway, given to a celebrity or a committee member or made on line via the luminary link.

“On behalf of the entire committee, we want to thank the sponsors, celebrity waiters and supporters of this event. We realize the pain of losing a loved one to cancer, so it is our commitment to continue the fight,” said Wyrick.

The 2nd Annual Conway Celebrity Waiter event will be held this Saturday at U.S. Pizza Conway. It’s the place to be to fight cancer while having fun doing so.
