4 employees at Little Rock NBC station fired

Posted: July 10, 2010 - 8:59am

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Three reporters and a cameraman at a Little Rock NBC affiliate have been fired after profanity-filled spoof videos turned up on YouTube, according to a report Friday by a Little Rock newspaper.

KARK General Manager Rick Rogala apologized in a statement Friday to viewers and said disciplinary action has been taken. The videos, first reported by Arkansas Business, show the reporters using profane language and poking fun at their jobs. The videos were originally posted on YouTube but have since been removed.

Rogala called the spoof videos "unauthorized, offensive and distasteful."

Arkansas Business reported that the station fired on-air reporters Pete Thompson and Courtney Collins, who are married, and sports reporter Jake Hatley. News photographer Chris Jameson also was fired.

Thompson told Arkansas Business earlier this week that the videos were made as a joke to practice for Little Rock's upcoming 48-Hour Film Project.

Sheesh...

Where is your sense of humor, KARK? The videos were pretty tame compared to what is on late night TV these days. Also, did it say 'KARK' or 'NBC' anywhere in the video? Nope. You should have just reprimanded the individuals, get some free PR on it, and then you probably would have seen your ratings increase! I think you will lose viewers over this, actually.

You decide... here is a link to a couple of the videos:

KARK is sinking fast

KARK, where Arkansas matters, is not really the case. I know on good source that some Facebook fans have posted messages of support to the fired employees and the administrator has deleted them. There is no word anywhere about there termination, I guess KARK is afraid of the backlash and censors THE NEWS!!!

The videos were in bad taste, but not worthy of termination. The reporters were not on-the-clock, it is not said if KARK's cameras were used. Yes, they filmed in the news studio, but I can assure you other staff also use that room for their own purposes. KARK is rapidly sinking, and now they just canned most of their reporters. They are either firing people left and right or letting them bail off the station without trying to retain good on air talent. While I never liked Pete Thompson, his wife Courtney was a class act and it is our lose with their termination.

Always gotta watch what you do/say in this era of technology. They could have at least made the videos funny. They were both terrible.

Bad move, KARK

Was this group of previously-upstanding employees fired because they produced an awful video, or was it because they used KARK equipment to produce it? Nowhere did they mention NBC, KARK or any other company. Either way, I think the action was excessive, and reflects very poorly on Mr. Rogala and KARK. Indeed, Mr. Rogala has tarnished the good name of KARK in a way that the terminated employees did not. Personally, I prefer to watch the antics of Craig O'Neal on THV2 anyway.

Well it seems to me...

It seems to me that the General Manager is trying to do everything he can to ruin KARK. Jancey Sheats goes to part time to spend more time with her twins. They allow Lauren Lea to return to San Antonio rather than fight and offer raises to keep her here. They fire 3 reporters now. What do they have now? 2 Reporters and tonight they have to bring Dave Woodward out of retirement again to anchor the newscast. Things do not fair well for my once favorite station.

Remember the 4?

Remember the number 4 they sat behind for the newscast? Back in the day.
Wasn't it Woodman?

Please

The real question here is who put it on YouTube? If it was Pete and the wife, their common sense meter needs some adjusting.

Can't blame management for that. Using company equipment for something like that is a firing offense alone, not to mention the obvious lack of respect they have for the people in their audience.

You can hate where you work all day long, but to put it on video and then on the internet is really, really stupid. If you think it's okay, it's time to grow-up. You do this kind of moronic stuff in high school and college. Even then, it's stupid.

I say, that they knew what they were doing, and wanted to get fired.

Straight to the unemployment office for the 4 of them. That's the system these days.

No doubt hey hated their jobs, but if they quit instead of got fired, then they couldn't get unemployment.
