Thinking Thanksgiving and holiday shopping

Posted: November 21, 2009 - 5:34pm

Am I the only one who feels that it shouldn’t be Thanksgiving yet? I think all the nice weather lulled me into thinking I had more time. Now I’m about to be staring down a Christmas deadline I’m not quite ready for. However, I am looking forward to decorating and seeing all the relatives and, of course, all the food.

Some of you are looking forward to the shopping as well. I wish you happy hunting if your plans include braving the day-after-Thanksgiving crowds. I have been trying to avoid the crack-of-dawn madness in all that, and have done so pretty successfully for several years. There are two things that make me a bad candidate for shopping buddy on that day. For one, I don’t much like shopping. Also, I’m not very competitive. I wouldn’t survive 30 minutes. I’ll see you all out and about when things calm down a bit.

Fitness center opening soon

10 Fitness plans to open Dec. 1 at 2125 Harkrider St., Suite 41. The facility is 30,000 square feet and offers cardio equipment, bicycles, treadmills, free weights, women’s only workout rooms, tanning rooms, etc. It is for customers 18 and older. A basic membership is $10 per month with a $49 joining fee.

Business sells vehicles online

Some of you have been wondering about a place behind Conway Commons on Amity Road that has a sign that says Zoom Online Auctions. The Linn family of Linn’s Auto and Equipment has started this business along with a few other employees. The first online auction, Repozoom.com, went live Saturday. At Repozoom.com, consumers have access in an online environment to repossessed assets (cars, trucks, SUVs, boats, personal watercraft, bulldozers, RVs). Tim Watts of Zoom Online Auctions said customers will be provided with a wealth of information to evaluate the vehicles and that the site is easy to use.

Restaurant making changes

O’Henry’s, a restaurant at 283 Highway 365 South, will expand its menu soon. Henry Lee, the executive chef, took some time off, but he is back now. Gina Perkins, who formerly operated a popular restaurant in Conway, has been cooking her homestyle fare for the restaurant in the interim. Dan Lee, Henry’s father, built the restaurant to give his son, a New York-trained chef, a place to live his dream of having his own restaurant. When I first heard about them, they were so new, they did not have their credit card machine installed yet. They have it in now, as it has been a year or more.

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Have a great week.
