he St. Joseph basketball teams recorded a sweep of Scranton in nonconference basketball action Tuesday night at the Family Activity Center.
The defending champion Bulldogs improved to 3-1 overall with a 57-45 win, while the Lady Bulldogs — who were runners-up last season — took a 57-39 win for their fourth victory in as many tries.
The St. Joseph teams return to action next Tuesday hosting Heber Springs.
BOYS
The Bulldogs had three players in double figures to lead the charge.
Zach Hambuchen led all scorers with 15 points and recorded four steals. Cash Schichtl, who also had eight rebounds, and Jesse Light had 10 points each. St. Joseph, though, didn’t get much separation until the third quarter.
Leading 29-20 at halftime, the Bulldogs had their second straight 17-point quarter to take a 46-30 lead into the final period. From there, St. Joseph coasted.
“A win is a win,” Bulldogs coach Brent Bruich said. “We must improve on the little things on both ends of the floor.”
Tyler Jones scored seven points, while Marcus Kordsmeier also had seven points to go along with seven assists and four steals. Wade Beck added four rebounds.
GIRLS
After a low-scoring first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs had a 22-point second to take momentum and go on for the win.
Leading just 6-3 after the first, St. Joseph got the offense going and took a 28-15 lead into halftime. The Lady Bulldogs allowed just 24 points after halftime en route to staying unbeaten.
“Overall, we played OK,” St. Joseph coach Chris Kordsmeier said. “At times, we executed very well on offense. We need to do a better job of not fouling by playing better defense.”
Kelsey Davidson led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points and four steals. Jessie Moix had 14 points, six assists and three steals, while Brooke Enderlin scored eight points to go along with five rebounds and four steals. Heather Moix chipped in six points and six rebounds, while Elaine Kordsmeier had four points and five rebounds.
