At a meeting at the Legion Hut, members of the Faulkner County Association for Retarded Children made first plans for projects to aid retarded children of this county. In a discussion program led by Dr. Mary K. Sands and Mrs. James Stewart, the group agreed to give all possible support, both financial and moral, to any special education classes started in the county. They discussed the possibility of starting a sheltered workshop for older children on its rolls. In such workshops, retarded persons were trained in gainful occupations so that they could contribute to the community rather than be a drain upon it. A daycare nursery was being formed by the group to take care of the younger handicapped child. Mrs. Cecil Graham and Mrs. Swight Stinson had charge of that program. Willis Watkins Jr., president of the organization, pointed out the organization had the names of 52 children on its rolls, from infants to young adults. Mr. and Mrs. Harrell Hankins of Greenbrier served as hosts to the meeting.
