The T.E.L. class of the First Baptist Sunday school met with Mrs. W.E. McClain. A covered dish luncheon was served to 21 members. Mrs. J.R. Edwards presided at the business meeting. A devotion lesson was given by Mrs. Ray. Officers for the year were elected as follows: Mrs. W.E. Atkinson, teacher; Mrs. W.O. Durham, president; Mrs. J.R. Edwards, first vice president; Mrs. W.W. Westmoreland, second vice president; Mrs. S.F. Dorrill, third vice president; Mrs. C.A. Markham, secretary (elected for the eighth consecutive term); Mrs. Claud V. Ross, assistant secretary; Mrs. L.B. Pence, treasurer; Mrs. W.E. McClain, reporter; Mrs. N.E. Fraser, Mrs. J.P. Plant, Mrs. G.P. Carter and Mrs. W.N. Deaton, group captains; and Mrs. R.F. Adams, chairmen of enlistment committee.

(1959)

First Pyramid Life announced a new office for James O. Moore and John H. Opitz at 220 Halter Building in Conway. The notice said: “Counselors for all your insurance needs.”

Regular and volunteer members of the Conway Fire Department were attending the Arkansas State Fire College in Searcy, a two-week school designed to instruct and improve methods of firefighting. Regular members of the Conway department were Wilson Drews, chief; Charles Powers, assistant chief; Louis Winter, Oscar Florence, Carroll Southerland and Billy Wright, drivers. Adolph Favre was captain of the volunteers. Others were Bob Morris, Jerry Bell, Troy Kerby, Glenn Vann, Coy Glover, Clois Fronabarger, Norbert Hoyt, Paul Lachowsky, Dwight Matchett, Hubert Futrell, Joe Young, Robert Ward, Sherl Blake and Doyne Ball.

(1984)

Bulging enrollment forced the Conway School District’s Board of Education to hire three additional teachers. Superintendent Carl Stuart said the three new teachers were Madelyne Joanne “Jody” Bass, a fourth-grade teacher at Julia Lee Moore Elementary School; Janie Bloxom, a fourth-grade teacher at Ellen Smith Elementary School; and Kay Sunderland, a second-grade teacher at Florence Mattison Elementary School. Theresa Hoelzeman joined the teaching staff at Jack’s Music in Conway. She would provide instruction in both piano and violin.

(1999)

Faulkner County 4-H members, leaders and alumni attended the annual 4-H State O’Rama competition at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Ellen Pennington of Conway was honored as the 1999 Arkansas 4-H record book and scholarship winner in veterinary science. Molly Stanley of W.I.L.D. Things Club in Conway was a two-time winner in the competitive activities. She took top honors in the fashion revue-constructed competition and won a trophy in the career pursuit activity sponsored by Tyson Foods. Amber Hieronymus of the Greenbrier club received the second place award in fashion revue casual purchased, and Amy Evatt of Vilonia was the fourth place winner in fashion revue-dressy purchased. Colby Evatt of Vilonia was second in gun safety-BB gun marksmanship. Daniel Hieronymus of Greenbrier placed third in bait casting. Kirk and Bulah Stock of Vilonia were awarded the 1999 4-H Leaders of the Year title. They had served as 4-H leaders since 1989. Lloyd Westbrook of Conway was chosen the 1999 4-H Alumni of the Year.
