As the curtain came down on the city league last night, the all-star aggregation, recruited by Joe B. McGee, who was forced to substitute four players at the last moment, made the city league leaders look like cellarites. The all-stars had 24 hits. The final score was all stars 21 and M.K. Grocer Company five. Layton Gray pitched for the all stars and held the city champions to six hits. Ten of the 11 players used by the all stars, even including the manager who went in as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning, hit safely. Hilliard Lyons and Russell Charles got four hits each. Shirley Durham and Kessinger Nowell got three each while Jumper, Anthony Glover and Lynn got two each. Durham, Anthony and Glover got homeruns as did Price of M.K. Glover’s homerun was the longest of the season. The ball cleared a row of cars in left field.

The flurry of excitement that swept Conway this week was the result of lots of concentrated efforts by several people. Universal Match Corp was coming to Conway. One person who deserved a lot of credit for the successful negotiations was Thomas G. Wilson, president of First State Bank. He was especially to be commended for arranging financing, which was the key to the deal. Over 97 meetings and conferences were held over a two-and-a-half-year period just to get a commitment from an insurance company to finance the building cost. The initial contact for the business was made when Robert A. McNutt was serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce. R.T. Steel was later elected and continued negotiations. Universal’s first request was for a 30,000 square foot building on 10 acres. Their needs expanded with passing time and eventually they asked for a building with 200,000 square feet and got 26 acres of land.
