France sent her condolence to Germany for the death of Germany’s President Paul von Hindenburg. His passing could mean much to France. France hoped Hitler would try to strengthen his position by taking some calmer elements into the cabinet rather than pursuing his Nazi campaign of “ruthlessness.” Officials pointed to the June 30 “bloody purification” and the Austrian affair ending in the assassination of Chancellor Dollfuss, claiming that they were actions that forecast dark days unless Hitler changed his ways. “We have Hitler now instead of Germany,” said one high official. “Von Hindenburg was the brake on the Nazi violence and the touch of conservatism in Hitler’s rule. Now Hitler’s reign is supreme.”

The Lake Conway Home Demonstration Club met at the home of Mrs. Anton Moix. Mrs. George Evatt, Mrs. Eugene Moix, Mrs. Tony Triollet and Mrs. Ruby Hardin were elected to serve on the Faulkner County Fair booth committee. Mrs. Wendell Loyd was welcomed as a new member.

Volunteer workers in Conway and Faulkner County were preparing for a mass polio clinic to be held this weekend at the courthouse. Mrs. James E. Crafton, public health nurse, was the director of the clinic. Enough vaccine was on hand for 4,000 injections. Workers had been conducting canvasses throughout the county for the past two weeks. A house-to-house project was carried on in Conway by the Junior Auxiliary. Similar drives were conducted by the county Home Demonstration clubs.

Conway and an Oklahoma site were reportedly finalists for an AmTran plant expansion. Conway Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Robert McCormack hoped for good news. Mayor Tab Townsell said, “We are trying hard to win this project.” Bob Whitehouse, president of AmTran Corp. in Conway, said he didn’t know where the expansion would be, but it could mean 1,000 new jobs for the lucky site. Townsell said, “We have some things going for us and a few going against us. One thing is they might want to put all of their eggs in one basket in Conway. Another is we are a right-to-work state and Oklahoma is not. We are one of the few southern states that are right-to-work. The downside is if we do not get a new plant, there is a good possibility that we not only won’t gain 1,000, but we could lose 400 workers. That is the scary part.”
