Life is short but art endures. The Italian greats: Michelangelo, Raphael, and Da Vinci just to name a few knew this to be true. And now we are thankful recipients of their artwork that endures. Let us consider the patience and determination it must have taken Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. The fresco is measured to be more than the length of a full basketball court. Today, more than five centuries (Duration 1508-12) after completion the Sistine Chapel sees more than 5 million visitors a year. One of the most famous paintings of all time, Mona Lisa, has become a household name that even the youngest of school children can deliver!
You will be hard pressed to find someone that does not have some sort of a love affair with Italy. It makes sense doesn’t it? Known for its food, culture of style, design, long history, architecture, and not to mention the natural beauty of the land — there is something for everyone. My love for the country perhaps come from the fact that it is the country of my husband’s upbringing, but may also have something to do with my love for “gelato al limone.”
Just north of Rome is Civita Castellana. This is a picturesque village home to an immersion based art school. Two of Art on the Green’s artists were honored to be featured as the artists in residence that lead the 2017 summer long workshop in Civita Castellana. Jason Sacran and John P. Lasater IV, both of whom are especially fond of plein air found the hillsides of the Lazio region to be just fine for plein air painting. Art on the Green welcomes this charismatic duo to the gallery for an unveiling of their latest Italian works sure to bring to life the Italian countryside and “la dolce vita.” Come ready to experience art that endures and works that harken to centuries gone by.
