(1917)

The Preparatory Department of Hendrix College showed their superiority over the “dignified” seniors by giving them a severe drubbing. The score was 33 to 14. “Piggie” Sinclair and Dick Schisler, playing the forward position, displayed accurateness that has never been excelled on the Bulldogs’ court. This pair of basket tossers made 23 of the Preps’ points.

75 years ago

(1942)

A letter dated January 2 from Mrs. Arvor Ledbetter said she and her son, Bill, are leaving Kechikan, Alaska, where Captain Ledbetter is stationed, and will spend the remainder of the winter with her mother at Green Bay, Wis. All officers stationed there have been directed to send their wives and children home, Mrs. Ledbetter wrote Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ledbetter of Conway.

Pictured: Republican Winthrop Rockefeller became Arkansas’ 37th elected governor and its first GOP governor since the Reconstruction ear when he was sworn in Tuesday by Chief Justice Carlton Harris of the state Supreme Court.

(1992)

The congregation of First United Methodist Church has reacted with a conscientious regard for the unfortunate circumstances of members of First Baptist Church, who lost their church sanctuary last weekend in a disastrous fire. The Methodist family quickly marshalled forces to organize a fundraising event to help restore some of the church’s loving possessions, such as its hymnals, which were destroyed in the blaze.

Who’s on the other end of a 9-1-1 call? In Faulkner County’s case, the operator receiving those calls speaks from within Conway Emergency Operations Center, also known as “the mountain,” or “the emergency bunker,” on Hogan Road. Since 2004, that’s where emergency dispatch operators from city and county police, fire and ambulance services have been stationed. And that’s where this week new dispatchers learned to talk to callers, call up information and send out emergency response teams in the Public Safety Telecommunicator I class held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
