Rapert's resolution on gay marriage ban fails in Legislature

Posted: May 16, 2014 - 10:35am

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas lawmakers have blocked a resolution urging the state Supreme Court to uphold a ban on same-sex marriage.

A non-binding resolution objecting to a judge's decision striking down the ban failed before the Arkansas Legislative Council on a procedural vote Friday. The resolution would have urged justices to overturn Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza's ruling striking down all measures preventing gay couples from marrying.

The proposal failed to win enough votes to be considered by the panel.

The resolution by Republican Sen. Jason Rapert also called on the court to invalidate hundreds of marriage licenses that have been issued since Piazza's ruling last week.

Senator Rapert

on the war path to block FREEDOM AND EQUALITY! This man does not need to be representing anyone.

Live and let live, Senator Rapert. Don't be a roadblock to the constitutionally guaranteed 'right to equal treatment under the law'!

I would say that if he wrote

I would say that if he wrote a piece of legislation to ask the SC to uphold the law, then he is listening to 75% of his constituency. That is what he was elected to do. He should be commended for it instead of heckled by you.

Right, but when you swear to

Right, but when you swear to uphold the Constitution, that includes the equal protection stuff that makes you feel icky. You cannot vote down rights guaranteed in the Constitution, you can only demagogue off them.

vote

This is your fault, folks. Vote better next time, or accept that our area goes down in the history books as the place the crazy backwards politicians came from.

Wow

That Governor's debate was better than Comedy Central. You can't write stuff that funny and that wrong. I laughed till I cried.

Wait a minute

If we're going to call for embracing acceptance, and ask for understanding by those conflicted by this need to embrace and accept, can we not at least invert that for those bowed up over the thing?

Saying, in effect, "Sit down and shut up" is what this affair is about, about no longer saying that (in effect) to gay couples. The least we can do is practice what we preach.

The guy's obviously dealing with opposition here, and we can presume it comes from some long-held belief. You should be happy. Others equally opposed do not have a bully pulpit from which to declare their stance, from which to have their call for action turned down.

This is democracy in action, and humanity. Fighting fire with fire is what jerks do.

Ifight fire with fire

Saying "sit down and shut up" is democracy in action as well. If Rapert had the support of the people (and the word means 'people rule) then he wouldn't have to sit down and [filtered word] up,

Let the history show that as this battle waged we didn't stand by and let Roberts Rules of Order dictate the tone,,,,

We cancelled out Bin Laden by murdering him but we don't call those Seals murderers.

Rapert has an immature worldview, and should be met with these shouts.

Taking out the monster that caused this country such grief is nothing but justice being done. Murder my foot.

not kidding

Since I'm not a 72 year old Republican you would know when I'm joking and you would laugh.

Bin Laden was a monster BUT sitting by watching a segment of the populus be deprived of rights because of some Looney tune relationship with a make believe dirty and a loonier still interpretation of its 'word' and an even loonier belief that all of this should be applied to our civil code stretches beyond Bin Laden's life span.

Not kidding
