Fanfare for a Festive Day

Hoping for a cool breeze on a summer night, supporters of the Conway Community Band will take blankets and folding chairs to Simon Park in Downtown Friday night to hear a collection of popular and fun band music.

Kicking off the concert will be the members of the Arkansas National Guard Five Star Brass Quintet that will play pre-concert music beginning at 7:15 p.m., and again during a short intermission.

The Five Star Brass is a component of the 106th Army Band, Arkansas Army National Guard stationed at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in North Little Rock.

As part of the Army Bands Music Performance Team (MPT) concept, the Five Star Brass tours the State of Arkansas entertaining audiences of all ages in a variety of venues.

The 106th Army Band is commanded by CW2 Keith Dortch.

The concert theme is “Music That Influenced American Culture.”

The Community Band, conducted by Russell Langston, will play Fanfare for a Festive Day; Light Cavalry Overture; An American Civil War Fantasy; Instant Concert; Overture on the Wizard of Oz; and will close with John Phillip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Among the themes from “Wizard of Oz” are “Ding, Dong the Witch is Dead,” “If I only had a Brain,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz,” and “Over the Rainbow.”

The Community Band rehearses weekly during the summer, directed by Ricky Brooks, UCA Director of Bands.

Community Band sponsors are Arvest Bank, Downtown Partnership, Log Cabin Democrat and the Conway Convention and Visitors Bureau.
