The form of a bear is emerging from the memorial tree outside Wingo Hall at the University of Central Arkansas.

Sculptor Gary Keenan is on track to finish the bear by Thursday afternoon.Keenan started working on the bear Monday.

He's using power tools, chainsaws for large sections, and a carving bar for details, to bring the bear out of the wood.

The tree was planted in memory of a UCA alumni who served in World War II.

Keenan said on a break from carving Wednesday his most recent project, aside from the bear, was to carve a trout out of a tree in Little Rock.
