Officer McGary's weapon retired, given to family

Posted: April 23, 2013 - 8:22pm

In the past, the Conway Police Department  has retired the duty weapon of an officer who has reached his or her retirement of 20 years of service, but Conway Chief of Police AJ Gary recently requested a similar new tradition to honor fallen officers such as Officer William McGary.

McGary died of injuries he sustained when he was hit by a vehicle while on duty directing traffic around an accident earlier this year.

Conway City Council voted unanimously at their meeting Tuesday night to pass a resolution giving the police department the ability to retire the duty weapon of a fallen officer and present it to his or her family.

Directly following the vote, the chief of police presented McGary's weapon encased in a wooden box to his mother and father, Tonya and Harold.

"We all know Will McGary loved being a Conway Police officer," Gary said. "He loved this community, and there's no doubt in our minds that Will would have put in his entire career here."

Also at the city council meeting, the aldermen voted unanimously to authorize the mayor to request the Arkansas Highway Commission identify the section of Dave Ward Drive between Exchange Avenue and South German Lane as "Officer Will McGary Memorial Mile."

memorial mile

I think that Officer McGary gave more than a mile, change Dave Ward to
Officer Will McGary Blvd....he deserves it.

While I agree with you...

I think you also have to consider the mailing address that would change because of something like that. If they're not affected then I think you're right but there may be a little bit of a problem in changing that entire strip of HWY in the city. Like I said though if there wouldn't be any problems in changing the road then I agree with you.

Me too!

I think we also need a "Fallen Marines Lane", and a "Soldiers Memorial Cirlce"
