Joe D. (“Smoky”) Smith, Conway professional baseball player, who was shot by a local police officer here about 10 days ago in downtown altercation, returned to his home here today after spending a week at St. Vincent’s infirmary in Little Rock. He underwent an operation last week for removal of the bullet, which lodged in his right shoulder. Smith said his right arm is paralyzed and it is doubtful whether he will ever pitch baseball again. He said he would go to Memphis Saturday for an examination by Dr, Willis Campbell.
In event Smith is unable to play baseball, he will attempt to land a job umpiring in the Northeast Arkansas league, he said.

Dr. Harlan P. Blaine was elected temporary chairman of the Numismatic Society (coin collecting) at a meeting Wednesday at Dr. Blaine’s office.
Mrs. E. P. Swaffer was named temporary secretary at the organizational gathering.
Dr. Blaine said persons interested in coin collecting may contact him or Mrs. Swaffer. The next meeting is set for Wednesday, Feb. 21.
A door prize of a commemorative half dollar was won by C. C. Quattlebaum.

Betty Baker and her fiance, Ken Schichtl, recently were honored at a chili supper at the home of Danny Newberry of Conway.
Cindy Shrekenhofer of Conway and Brenda Naylor of Mayflower served as hostesses.
Guests were served chili, chips, dip party mix, sausage balls, punch and strawberry trifle. Guests presented the couple with various household gifts.
Miss Baker and Mr. Schichtl will exchange wedding vows at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mary Margaret Satterfield has been named the new director of tourism and marketing at the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce. A recent graduate of Louisiana State University, her first duty will be to develop an advertising plan for the city of Conway in addition to yearlong promotions for Faulkner County in general and Toad Suck Daze.
