Posted: February 8, 2012 - 6:26pm

The Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra will present its annual Waltz Night at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Worsham Performance Hall of the Student Life and Technology Center on the Hendrix College campus.

Ballroom dance demonstrations and instruction will be provided by Andrea Newsom.

The program will include favorite light classics such as waltzes, tangos and polkas including works by Johann Strauss, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Waltz and Bizet Habanera (from Carmen), Latin numbers La Bamba and Jalousie Tango, and even a few favorites from the air-waves and silver screen.

The Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Dr. Karen Griebling, 450-1249.

Admission is free, but donations will benefit the Arkansas Youth Orchestra’s scholarship program.

Tools from horns

The Early Arkansaw Re-enactors, in cooperation with the Faulkner County Museum, will present a how-to program on making useful items with cow horns from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Block House in Cadron Settlement Park.

How it was done back when will be shown by Larry Layne, a horn carver from Grant County. He fashions powder horns, cups, spoons and other utensils from cast-off cattle horns.

There will be other living history demonstrations, as the reenacators see fit, says Ree Walker.

The demonstration will be part of this year’s Second Saturday at the Block House program.

Cadron Settlement Park is off the old Morrilton Highway. Turn south on 319 and follow the road to Jeffery Sand Co., turn right into the park.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, the first permanent white settlement in central Arkansas was near the confluence of Cadron Creek and the Arkansas River, about five miles west of Conway.

A photo posted on the festival’s Facebook page shows a greening but no blooms yet.

It was fun to watch Facebook announcements over the weekend as students were reporting back to parents they had made All-State. Proud parents passed along the news. Cheers! What a great community builder Facebook can be.
