Posted: January 18, 2012 - 6:28pm

Veteran Conway actress Lillian Petrucelli has been chosen by Conway Community Arts for the lead in “Driving Miss Daisy,” a drama-comedy by Alfred Uhry about a wealthy dowager and her African-American chauffeur in the American South.

Carleton Brown will play the chauffeur Hoke, and Shane Shoemake will play Boolie, Daisy’s son.

The film adaptation of “Daisy” won the Academy Award for best picture of 1989. It starred Jessica Tandy as Daisy and Morgan Freeman as her long-suffering chauffeur. Boolie was played by Dan Aykroyd.

Rehearsals have begun for the play to be presented on Feb. 23, 24 and 25 and March 1, 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 and March 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lantern Theatre, located at 1021 Van Ronkle in downtown Conway.

Cindy Romeo is directing. Stage management is by Angel Moix and set design by Liz Parker.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 13 and are $12 each. Reservations are highly encouraged as all performances are expected to sell out.

Balloons, party hats and beans

If you are having a hard time coming up with a theme for your child’s next birthday party, the Arkansas Food Bank has a good idea.

The latest trend is to blow off the gift wish list filled with yet another Transformer or Barbie and instead encourage party goers to bring non-perishable food pantry items that will help feed the less fortunate.

In this economy, with so many parents out of work and struggling to pay the bills, more and more kids are waking up without knowing what, how or even if they’ll eat that day.

That’s why contributions to food banks are more important than ever.

The Arkansas Foodbank distributes food to about 300 food pantries, child feeding programs, shelters and soup kitchens across Central and South Arkansas.

Donations of all sizes are accepted at the Food Bank warehouse at 4301 W. 65th St. in East Little Rock every weekday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

A wish list of the 10 food items needed most can be downloaded from the website, www.arkansasfoodbank.org

Slip that list into your next party invitation and you’ll be ensuring that your kids and their friends will learn how great it feels to truly give.

MORE FROM FOOD BANK

“CANstruction” is a design/build competition that puts a visual spotlight on hunger while showcasing the design community of central Arkansas.  And it’s also a food drive!

Local architecture firms, including SCM Architects, Cromwell Architects Engineers, Fennell Purifoy Architects, RPPY Architects and WER Architects/CDI Contractors, compete with each other to build giant sized objects made entirely out of canned food.

The creations will be on view to the public at an exhibit  from Jan. 28 until Feb. 15 at the Clinton Presidential Library (teams work Thursday, Jan. 26, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday, Jan 27, from 5 p.m. to midnight to build their structures).

Entries will be judged in five official categories: Jurors’ Favorite, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity and Honorable Mention.

At the close of the exhibit, all cans used to create the structures will be donated to the Arkansas Foodbank.
