Here’s another serving of “David’s Appetizers,” assorted tidbits, musings and observations on the sports scene:
WILEY UPDATE
Former Conway High baseball star Mike Wiley goes into the hospital Monday for a variety of treatments, tests, EEGs, and measurements for head/brain for surgery.
In an e-mail, he expressed thanks for those who have responded during his difficulties.
He’s seeking corporate support as his bills exceed $2,000 per month and he has no income because he is not allowed to work from home because of his medical condition. That’s been a challenge since he had a lucrative job with an insurance company. He’s been unable to secure corporate support in the area he lives.
Donations are tax deductible if sent through his church, Grace Fellowship in Lampasas, Texas, which is distributing money.
His recovery is expected to take four to six months.
CLEMENS
The mistrial concerning Roger Clemens’ on his performance-enhancing drug charges is disturbing.
Apparently, the prosecution blew it, trying to introduce evidence that had been disallowed by the judge during pretrial proceedings.
Taxpayer money had already been spent seating a jury. Mistrials do no one any good.
It’s uncertain whether we’ll ever know the truth.
And the cloud remains on the Steroid Era in baseball.
NFL
It appears there’s a deal in the works for that labor dispute that has consumed the offseason.
Most know something would be worked out. There is too much money to be made to put the NFL season in jeopardy.
THE BRITISH OPEN
Royal St. George’s is a strange course. We haven’t seen many balls settle in the middle of the fairway.
And it’s a different game in fair weather.
As in most tournaments this year, it’s wide open.
If the wind and rain come in as expected Sunday, it could get wild and wildly entertaining.
