Get on the list. If you have not joined the Log Cabin’s Christmas Card, there is still time. For a dollar each, get your name and loved ones’ names in the paper, but more importantly, do a little something for kids who need a helping hand. Every penny of the Christmas Card money is put to use on individual cases at schools in the county. It is a most worthy cause.
Holiday hoops. If you are any sort of basketball fan, a welcomed break from harried Christmas preparations could be to take in a few games of the Battle at the Brier Classic at Greenbrier’s Panther Pavilion. Guy-Perkins, Vilonia and Greenbrier are competing, along with Searcy. Interesting matchups, obviously.
Between the lines? Clint Conque’s quitting the University of Central Arkansas football job for a similar one at Stephen F. Austin has people whispering about possible additional bad news for the local college. We’ll wait and see if Conque may have made a lateral move simply for taking on a new challenge of rebuilding a team.
Today’s values. Speaking of Clint Conque, he was highly successful in 14 years at UCA, but he was paid about 1/20th — one-twentieth — of the salary that Bret Bielema makes at the University of Arkansas. Conque was 105-59 in wins and losses those 14 years. Bielema was 3-9 in his 2013 inaugural year with the Razorbacks.
What is the priority? Much pushing and shoving is involved over the site for building a new home for veterans in Arkansas. Location is important, of course, but the most pressing need is for simply doing something quickly for these people who have earned our support. Too much yammering has clouded this failing to fulfill a commitment.
“It did not appear that it (Arkansas concealed carry law) opened up the right for somebody to strap on their six-shooter and walk into a Walmart.”
— Rep. Steve Magie (D-Conway)
