Thumbs 2/15/13

Posted: February 14, 2013 - 3:10pm

Uniqueness abounds. We have long thought Conway was a community with above the normal amount of interesting characters. One was in the news this week – Ray “Butterball” Rodgers. He is best known as a cut man in professional boxing circles, but Rodgers is a delight in nearly any conversation on nearly any topic.

Keep it at home. An element of the fuss over Conway school lunch religion that bothers us is the out-of-state lawyer being a spokesman for the school district. We elect and hire people to run our schools. If they seek input from an outside source, that is fine. But let the local school folks do the talking, please.

The critters around us. Interesting and unusual wildlife sights about in our land as well. Ralph Hemleb of Enola tells of driving up on some vultures feeding on roadkill. They flew at his vehicle’s approach, but one of the birds had a distinctive white head and white tail. Yes, a bald eagle. Our nation’s symbol is a scavenger.

Misplaced priorities. The Arkansas legislature is in session, and the top issues for it are guns and abortions. Come on, elected people. Can’t you put some focus on the economy, the top worry for more Arkansans? We do concede that affordable and broad-based medical insurance can fall into the economy category.

Masculinity? Mass murders have been much in our minds lately, and we have a question that continues to go without an answer. Why are these multiple killers all males? There are women who go off the deep end, certainly, but not to the extent of loading up with firearms and shooting a bunch of innocents. Why, pray tell?

Much trumpeting. Our hope is that this Alex Collins kid turns out to be the real thing as a Razorback running back after all the commotion over his signing with Arkansas. Yes, some critics dumped on our state’s flagship team after the “Mama ran off with the papers” incident down in Florida. Best wishes, Alex.

“I once told mother that my life did not matter. She said that was not true because at least four mothers in the neighborhood point to me as a bad example.”

— Conway’s Ray Rodgers,

long a boxing figure and adept

at self-effacing one-liners.
