We have started polls on our Website. This is the perfect time to get them cranked up again since the election is just a few weeks away. We have thrown out a couple of local races to gauge the public interest. It is safe to say the polls are not scientific.
But the poll does bring up an interesting question. Our recent one concerning the race for Conway's Mayor includes the three men on the official ballot: Current Mayor Tab Townsell, Mark Elsinger, and Randy Herrold ... or should I say, Randy Conservative Herrold.
That's how it appears on the ballot. It's not his name. But it's what he wants you to see. We checked with the county clerk's office, and if you are running for a position, you can have whatever name you want, within reason. I don't think you can have curse words in your name. I'm fairly certain you can't disparage your opponent in your name. And I don't think you can try to trick voters with your name. (Maybe calling yourself "The Real Tab Townsell" on the ballot — that won't fly)
But in an independent race, Herrold wanted to point out where he stood politically. I guess there is nothing wrong with, but it does look a bit odd on the ballot. To each his or her own.
But don't be surprised if you see John Banana Slug Jackson or Betty Free Money Smith in the next election.
