Friday, November 17, 2017, 11-17-1117, 1,500 days from yesterday (give or take a few leap days) we'll see the opening of Central Landing shopping extravaganza at the old airport.
Once the new Cantrell Field is opened, the work on the ground of the development will really begin. Now, it's all about the vision and selling to to the national chains. Does the Barnes and Noble agent like hanging baskets downtown? Is the Abercrombie & Fitch rep an amphibian lover, specifically toads? The realtor for the Polo Outlet Store loves American Idol? Bring on Kris Allen. To bribe Whole Foods, I'll put a tomato on the front page of the newspaper. The newsroom has a hankerin' for a Dave & Busters. Can we request Faulkner County be a non-Hooters zone? (And that includes teenagers' attire at the county fair and Toad Suck Daze!)
1,500 days of road construction including an overpass and possibly a Western Loop. We'll see turnover in our city and county leadership in the next 50 months. (Will Prince Street construction be finished by then?) In 2017, the remaining classified documents from JFK's assassination will be released; NASA is launching a new space program and there wil be a total solar eclipse. Kids who are 12 now will be the ones driving, 'hanging out' and working at Central Landing. And I'll be four years closer to qualifying for a senior discount, so that's good news.
With the city dedicating $18 million from tax revenue to this project, where will we find money to do the other needed street work? My spidey sense tells me a request for a bond issue is in our future.
We've got 1,500 days to get it together and make this happen because it's a game changer. A community changer. It's the stuff smaller cities dream of - 1,500 jobs and estimated sales tax revenue that's just too big to type. I'm all in.
