Assault rifles?

If I were a little smarter, I would just sit quietly and let this gun control hysteria run its course. Yeah, I own some guns, and no, I am not worried about anybody taking them away from me. But new legislation coming down on us from Washington? Possibly.

Two hot phrases are “assault rifles” and “high capacity magazines.” Isn’t the definition of an assault rifle a gun that is automatic or semi-automatic and has a large capacity magazine?

Automatics are already tightly regulated. If you have a semi-automatic rifle and a normal capacity magazine, 10 rounds or less, will that take it out of the “assault” category? There are many such rifles on the market and in use for hunting. One illustration is the Ruger Mini-14 Rancher. The standard model has a 5-round magazine. The “Tactical” version has a 20-round magazine.

Yes

And the SKS is another good example. Sold in it's original configuration, it has a fixed mag that only holds 10 rnds. But we all know how easily these guns can be modified to be menacingly looking assault rifles. So, do you ban the gun or just the accessories that turn it into a big scary looking gun?

Gun control (NRA) hysteria is

Gun control (NRA) hysteria is right...

"Congress refuses to allow a centralized gun database, so tracing a weapon used in a crime means a lot of legwork, says former ATF agent William Vizzard. "They have to contact the manufacturer or importer, who tells them, 'Oh, on July 14, 2009, we shipped that gun to Buckeye Sporting Goods, a wholesaler.' Then you contact Buckeye Sporting Goods, and they say, 'Oh, yeah, we received that gun four days later and we shipped it out to Billy Bob's Bait and Tackle Shop.' Then you go to Billy Bob and you say, 'OK, what do your records say?' ""
...
"The Brady Center's Lowy says that more than 100,000 guns are missing from dealers' shelves. There's a great likelihood that most of those guns were sold off the books to criminals," he says. "Easy way to fix that is to simply require dealers to do an inventory every year of their stock. ATF is prevented from even requiring dealers to do that. That makes absolutely no sense.""

Ask Mr. Holder

Perhaps some of these missing guns found their way to Northern Mexico.

I am guessing too, that if the gun dealer was a good manager of his business, he is doing inventory. I understand that leaves alot to be said.

Assault rifle vs assault weapon

An assault rifle is a selective fire (selectable among either fully automatic, burst-capable, or, sometimes, semi-automatic modes of operation) rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. It should be distinguished from the US legal term assault weapons.[1] Assault rifles are the standard service rifles in most modern armies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle Assault weapon refers to different types of firearms, and is a term that has differing meanings and usages. ........ In discussions about gun laws and gun politics in the United States, an assault weapon is most commonly defined as a semi-automatic firearm possessing certain features similar to those of military firearms. Semi-automatic firearms fire one bullet (round) each time the trigger is pulled; the spent cartridge case is ejected and another cartridge is loaded into the chamber, without the manual operation of a bolt handle, a lever, or a sliding handgrip. ........ The use of the term "assault weapon" is also highly controversial, as critics assert that the term is a media invention,[7] or a term that is intended to cause confusion among the public by intentionally misleading the public to believe that assault weapons (as defined in legislation) are full automatic firearms when they are not.[8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon One thing noticed in all of the gun talk is it seems that everyone wants to have their own definition of what The Second Amendment means. If anyone wants to take the time to read this I highly recommend it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_Amendment EDIT: Another fact that I found is that of the 8,583 murders that were committed in 2011 using firearms, 72.5% of them were done with a handgun. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-... According to a TV report, 2.8% of firearm deaths were committed with an assault weapon. The TV cited fbi.gov as its source. I am currently trying to verify that.

Good Report

It makes me wonder now, if an AR-15 that does not have a bayonett lug with a 10 round mag would still be concidered an "assult weapon"? I honestly don't know what it means by assult weapon.

Hand guns

I would very much favor stricter control and tracking of the sale of handguns. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court decision of 2008 (District of Columbia v. Heller) makes that near impossible. I did disagree with that 5-4 decision but unlike some in this discussion would never go against the law of the land. I would encourage anyone to carefully read that decision which, for the first time, clearly upheld an individual's right to own a firearm unconnected with membership in any militia. However, the decision also clearly stated that certain limits could be placed on ownership, particularly limits to people convicted of felonies and those who had documented mental illnesses and regulations related to the commercial sale of guns.

Anyone

Anyone, liberal or conservative or whatever, wants to do something to make sure our innocent children are safe from harm. For most, the political discussion is about what that something should be. It is only the absolute fringe who wants to pretend Sandy Hook and Aurora and all the rest never happened and to do nothing.
