This newspaper has lost more than its share of good people in the last few years, and one of them was my friend, the late, great Daniel Doyle.
Daniel ended up getting fired from the Log Cabin. He was very, very smart and sometimes also very crazy. Life can be hard for smart, crazy people under the best of circumstances, and a career in print journalism seldom provides "best circumstances."
Daniel Doyle had some problems with the job sometimes, but did not tolerate what he perceived as lies, hypocrisy and abuses of power — to a fault — and he famously disliked Mike Maggio.
He died of a heart attack well before "geauxjudgegate" sent Maggio's Court of Appeals campaign spinning way up into the grandstands in a ball of fire, but he would have watched the crash in raptures. And now, to imagine the judge prancing right in at the hot check office to abuse his power and misuse the system to harass and bully a rival, would confirm every suspicion that Daniel had about the judge's character.
I want it to be known for the record in this newspaper that he periodically loved so much, that my friend Daniel Doyle kicked Mike Maggio well before he was down.
