UConn and Kentucky, the teams that played for the NCAA men's title, were the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively, with national champion UConn just barely getting past St. Joseph's in overtime in the first round.
SMU and Arkansas were not named to the NCAA field and went to the NIT, SMU advancing to the finals.
SMU defeated UConn twice during the regular season.
Arkansas, in addition to defeating Minnesota, beat Kentucky twice.
