One of the great back stories of the Winter Olympics concerns Gus Kenworthy and Russian puppies.
Stray dogs are apparently in abundance in Sochi. So many, in fact, that the Russians have hired exterminators to reduce the population.
Kenworthy was on a practice run when he saw a stray puppy. Upon further examination, he found a litter plus a mother.
He has always had a soft heart for dogs and his dog, the family dog, die a year ago.
He took the puppies and mother to temporary shelter at the media center and began making arrangements and vaccinations for adoptions back in the States.
He is staying in Sochi several extra days after his competition to complete all the paperwork and details to take the dogs back with him to Colorado for a permanent home.
He says even puppies like puppy love.
He won a medal — and discovered adorable puppies to boot.
Nice Olympics. Cold noses and a warm heart.
