The most famous drop on New Year's Eve is the crystal ball at Times Square in New York City.
But that's not the only thing to get the drop in welcoming the new year.
Here are some of my distinctive favorites:
Mobile: A giant Moon Pie.
Atlanta: An 800-pound fiberglass peach
Plymouth, Wisc.: A large decorated cheese wedge
Panama City, Fla.: A lighted beach ball
Bethlehem, Pa.: A giant marshmallow Peep (the candies are made there).
Prescott, Ariz.: A giant cowboy boot
And, my favorite for the weirdest and so Southern:
Brasstown, N.C.: A live caged possum. (It is later released. But will it play possum on New Year's Day?)
