For those Conway folks and UCA supporters hoping against hope, Tim Horton will not be the next football coach at the University of Central Arkansas.
The former Conway High star tailback was mentioned as a candidate and was obvious a strong favorite, but I'm not sure he ever put his name into the hat as a serious candidate because of his current situation at Auburn. The timing was awful for him to return to Conway. I'm not sure he ever interviewed for the job but simply said, "Thanks but can't do it at this time," to UCA athletic director Brad Teague when he inquired.
First, Horton has received a raise and some bonuses this year for Auburn's successful season. The financial security is there as well as being a resume-building assistant to Gus Malzahn and coaching a Heisman Trophy finalist.
He is also excited about coaching in the BCS championship game, which few coaches get a chance to do. To coach in a national championship game is what most coaches dream about. You cherish those opportunities.
But the main reason is family. His family is happy at Auburn. His children love the community and the school. I have it on very good authority that Tim did not think he could move his family again at this time and removed himself from consideration.
He loves Conway and he'll always be a UCA fan, but the stars are not aligned correctly at this time.
