Especially in the first half, the University of Central Arkansas Bears had one of their most efficient season openers in history with a 58-7 victory over Incarnate Word.
It was UCA's largest margin of victory as an NCAA Division I program,
Sure, there are plenty of things to work on, including three fumbled punts.
But there were encouraging things from young and old. Senior quarterback Wynrick Smothers completed 27 of 31 passes for 267 yards. The backup quarterbacks, Ryan Howard and Taylor Reed, both led touchdown drives. Sophomore receiver Blake Gardner caught 10 passes.
Transfer back Blake Veasley, who is running No. 2 but played in place of suspended Willie Matthews, rushed for 267 yards.
But the most dynamic player on the field was freshman receiver Jatavious Wilson, the master of the jitterbug. He had two touchdown receptions and returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. He has an extra gear.
Next up for UCA is Colorado, which many observers think the Bears have a great chance to defeat.
