POT HOLES * POT HOLES* POT HOLES * Little One, Big Ones, Huge Ones

I know there's been a lot of rainfall this year, but I really wish the city would take care of our streets better.  Everyday there's a new pot hole!  Stanley Russ was just paved a few months ago and already has a huge pot hole where the old and new payment meets.  Is the project ever going to be completed? It's not level. The center of the road look horrible.   What about Donaghey? It has more holes and craters than the moon. What about Favre?  They start projects and take forever to finish.  The cheapest bid is not always the best,  if the quality of the product is going to suffer.  Please, finish these project. My auto repair bills are piling up.    So far I've had to get an alignment, a new tire and a new rim.  Please, fix the roads!  I would suggest just they scrap the new road to HP  from Stanley Russ, and work on the existing street issues.  It's way too steep and it's not going to be finished by December anyway!

Suggestion

Don't hit the potholes, then you won't damage your car.

overtherainbow34

I have to agree.

Our roads are awful! Salem and Donaghey are the worst roads ever! Maybe our lovely mayor can't feel all of the pot holes in his big fancy car?

voted down

Just this past week, I was thinking the same thing while driving down Prince. We moved here 8 years ago...if I remember correctly, everytime we've had a chance to vote for road repair and improvements, it's been voted down.

pot holes

We may not have great roads, but we have some great ball fields and city parks. Our tax dollars only go so far, we can't expect to have everything.....

overtherainbow34

yeah!

I love that the ball parks come before our roads. What a great idea....as long as we can still play ball who cares if we have a car left after driving down the road to get to the ball park.

Potholes

The City of Conway has done a great job getting things done. The complaints from folks about the ballparks are just petty. Money is allocated for certain things, and the money that is allocated can only be used for those specific projects. The Mayor has accomplished alot in his years of service for the citizens of Conway. I would like to see any of you that think you have all the answers, step in and do the job better than those that are already doing the job. I guarantee you one thing, once you had to deal with people like yourselves you would be ready to resign and go back to your quiet existance. Stop complaining about the things you can't change. Our City Departments strive to do their best job for the citizens of Conway. There is no way to make everyone happy. Stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution. The City Council meets every other Tuesday. Voice your concerns there and man up to your responsibilities as residents of Conway. Complaining gets you know where. Offer solutions, instead of griping.

Parks and Roads

We have new ballfields and quality parks because the citizens of Conway passed a bond issue specifically for parks several years ago. Those bond proceeds cannot be spent on roads. If you want better roads, you'll have to either pay more in taxes or authorize an additional bond issue -- and since there's no market for municipal bonds right now, new tax revenue would be the only way to pay for new and better roads. Who's going to be first in line to support a property tax increase?

farve

i really wish they would fix farve, they were out there non stop everyday tearin the road up and then they just disappeared and havent been back in weeks, worst part is we dont even know why they tore the road up? its torn up in sections..no explanation just tore up the road and left..even on the sunny days..nobody working???

dont be stupid

oh and for the dont be stupid comment...your entitled to your opinion, you sound like you work for the city? either way you should download a spell check before you try to go off on people for being upset about the roads..i think you mean "nowhere" not " know where"

justwantdanews

City is doing a great job? ? ?

Yeah, seems like a city worker or someone working for the construction company. I will stop complaning about the roads when I stop being charged taxes to pay for roads. Yes, they will have enough money to fix the street, if the city stops working on other pet project that really won't do much for the city as a whole, i.e. the "special" SECOND entrance to HP. I'm sure all the money spent dig out that hill and make a second entrance could have fixed all of bumps and holes on Donaghey, Favre and Middle Road . That $1 million project could have fixed a lot of other issues on streets with more traffic. Put the money where there is going to be a greater impact. What is happening to Favre? They jacked up the street last year and did a crappy repair job. What's going on with that now?

I just want the facts about news as it happens. I can do without the opinions.

Just another classic example of not having a comeback argument so you critisize grammar and spelling.

Priorities and Involvement

We do have some nice park facilities in Conway now, there's no question about that. Some would (and successfully did) argue that we've neglected our recreational facilities for a long period of time, and we needed to play "catch up". Thus, the citizens were presented with and subsequently approved a $14 million bond financed by a 20-year extension of one of the two cents of "hamburger tax".

It could be argued, however, that there certainly wasn't a mandate for this decision, seeing as how only 1500 people out of 52,000 cast a vote for or against this issue. Either way, 75% of those voting did vote in favor of it, and thus we have $14 million to spend on softball, baseball, fairgrounds, and trails.

Someone said previously this money can't be used for anything else. That's true. It's specifically set aside for its voter-authorized purpose - the four recreational projects mentioned above. By law, the city cannot use this money for any other purpose.

Several sales tax financed bond issues for streets and other projects were floated to the public in the early 2000's, but all of them failed. Thus, we only have the money available from existing revenue sources for these types of projects.

After the "special" projects such as the previously mentioned Technology Park street projects, and others like the Harkrider roundabouts and lane reconstruction in front of Hendrix, the council generally has around a half-million dollars available each year to split among the four city wards for basic street repairs. In a city of our size, and as many here have lamented, that doesn't go very far.

Someone else mentioned their appreciation for the job we're doing at City Hall. Thanks for that. However, I appreciate all the comments - positive AND negative - that people have for their elected officials. Unfortunatly, any decision we make will be met with disapproval from a number of people involved with the issue. The goal is to craft overall decisions and long-range plans that will benefit the city as a whole. It's sometimes easy to know what's right. Sometimes, not so much.

But as was said by a previous poster, by all means, keep yourselves involved! Contact your leaders with your input. Learn as much as you can about issues in which you might not even have a stake. An active, interested, and informed citizenry is the BEST solution in how to build a better city.

Tab has his priorities

Who cares about pot holes when we have such awesome turnabouts? Look at Farris Road behind one of the largest universities in the state. The entire road is a giant pot hole, but it has one very nice turnabout.

As long as we have turnabouts, we can live with pot holes....... NOT!

disgusted taxpayer in ar.

I've lived in Conway for the better part of 20 years...use to live within the city limits until the city tryed bossing me around with their somewhat ridiculous, "city ordinance rules" concerning my vehicles.
Hmmm, maybe if conway would reprioritize their responsibilities to the community and it's roads, maybe then the community wouldn't have so many vehicles parked outside their homes in need of repairs.
I now live within the county, (thinking issues would be better). OMG! Not!
One thing I have learned about Conway and the surrounding area is that we as taxpayers apparently DO NOT HAVE A VOICE OF CHOICES as to where this money is going.
I feel that not only are we being ignored by the city and the county, we are also being ripped-off of the hard-earned taxes of which we pay.
GREAT JOB CONWAY & FAULKNER COUNTY.."NOT".

Play the pothole game

I would gladly pay more taxes for better roads. I would rather pay money to the government for good roads than keep paying my mechanic to fix my alignment. I'd rather pay more taxes than buy new tires.

I don't understand it when people complain about the possibility of taxes going up, and complain about the lack of public services and public maintenance in the same paragraph.

The roundabouts are pretty, but I'm flummoxed by the fact that the center has a nice sidewalk, but the places where pedestrians actually walk are not always paved. Maybe I should go walk around City Hall in my muddy shoes.

Finally from these comments, it is obvious that the residents of Conway are not spending enough on elementary and secondary education. Roads should be secondary to educating our children about how government and economics work.

Farve Road

Well they FINALLY patched up the holes in the road. It's a half-@ssed patch job but it beats the state it was in. I'm still curious as to why it was ripped up in the first place.

Fixing our roads

It should be noted that the past bond issue was due to expire but was voted on by the few voters who chose to vote good or bad to extend it for 20yrs. This came about after some of our leaders made comments that the money would never be there for parks for your children if this is made possible. Using the pay as you go method has never worked for Conway as they have a beer budget at best with champane taste. When I moved here the main concern was the flooding downtown which caused concern with business owners who had to use sand bags to keep their business out of harms way. There was talk of how to fix the problem but like a lot of things it got put on the back burner and not much has been done to fix this problem. The bond issue listed funding as well for police/fire and infrastructure. It was my understanding that certain city leaders had told HP that a freeway exit would be installed to facilitate easy access to their building that they will be leasing from the City of Conway. Now instead of fixing our roads that are falling down around us they are funneling that money into something else. We were annexed into the city limits over 12 1/2 years ago in hopes of getting city water. During that time frame we have repeatedly asked the city to fix our road which to them means dump some asphalt into the hole and run over it with either a pickup truck, dump truck or front end loader. We asked repeatedly where was the roller to pack down the asphalt and was either told it was broken, being used on another job or the city didn't have the money to fix our road. They are maintaining it is the last response I got from them. I asked what they were maintaining the pot holes? You get a chance drive down Deerbrook Drive and see if it isn't one of the worst roads in Conway. We are out off Salem road West of the Nutters on the Green, 900 unit apt complex and golf course. One of my neighbors was sent an e-mail by her alderman telling her we didn't pay enough taxes to have our road fixed. So there you have it. The leaders we have only want to build new roads and bike/walking trails but they do not want to fix our roads. The next project to waste your tax dollars on will be when they cut access off from the front of St. Joseph school and re-route that traffic through what used to be Conway Block. There is talk of widening Prince and College. Extending Salem south from the Nutters on the Green and then there is that Conway Loop that makes their eyes so starry you would think we were living in Hollywood or some place else of the rich and famous!
