75 years ago  

(1934)  

Tom Mabry was elected president of the local chapter of Future Farmers of Arkansas. Others elected to office included Frank Jones, Hillman Butlet, Dwight Sowell, Odell Stivers, Junior Sevier and Olen Thomas. The Future Farmers was an organization of boys studying vocational agriculture under t he provisions of the Smith-Hughes act. The local chapter held bi-monthly meetings.

The Faulkner County Young Democratic Club met at the courthouse and elected officers. New officers were Guy Jones, Robert Mosley, Roland Bradley, Noble Smith, and Thomas G. Wilson.

 

  

50 years ago 

(1959)

Cheerleaders were selected at Conway Junior High School. They included Linda Tackett, Connie Smith, Margo Dunaway, Brenda Turner, Marilyn Tackett, Lynn Ligon and Sandra Fulmer. Susie Mabry and Jo Beard, alternates.

Miss Sharon O’Kelley returned to Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. She was a senior.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Martin and daughter, Kathy, returned from a vacation spent at Miami Beach, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Bell accompanied them.

(1984)

A taboo-breaking drama of incest, a re-created slice of America’s Cold War history perennial favorite “Hill Street Blues.” Won top honors at the Emmy awards, with NBC taking home most of the awards. Four Emmy first-timers: Jane Fonda and CBS stars Tom Selleck, Jane Curtin and John Ritter – won acting awards. “Cagney and Lacey’s” Tyne Daly received her second straight and Laurence Olivier collected his fifth. “Something about Amelia,” was named best drama. Roxana Zal, who played the daughter victimized by incest, won as best supporting actress. “Concealed Enemies,” about the Alger Hiss – Whittaker Chambers controversy over alleged communists in the U.S. State Department that propelled Richard Nixon into the limelight after World War II, was named outstanding limited series. NBC’s “Hill Street Blues” led all comers with five Emmys, including best drama series. Jane Fonda won as best lead actress in “The Dollmaker.” Selleck won his first Emmy as best lead actor in a drama series for his role as the laid-back detective from “Magnum P.I.” Ritter got his first award as best lead actor in a comedy series for his work in “Three’s” Company. Miss Curtin was selected as best lead actress in the comedy series “Kate and Allie.”

(1999)

Conway White upped its volleyball record to 4-0 with a 15-6, 15-6 victory over Pulaski Academy. Rachel Copley had three kills, and Anna Summersett and Megan McConnell each had two. Copley also had a stuff. Courtney Skinkard served eight points with three aces in the first game. Cassie Burnell served six straight points in the second game. April Maltbia served four straight points in the second game.

Registration and introduction classes for Bible Study Fellowship’s 1999-2000 study of the book of Romans began this week for both the men’s evening class in Morrilton and the women’s day class in Conway. Contact Ronny Mobley, Joel Hawkins, Wrenetta Austin or Becky Cameron for information.
