At 100 years of age, Hawkins remembers way of life near turn of century
Abe Hawkins celebrated a benchmark recently -- his 100th birthday. A century before, on Feb. 26, 1899, Hawkins was born in the 'big log cabin.' His grandfather William Brehon Hawkins established the mini-plantation of four log cabins on 160 acres just north of Mount Vernon in 1860. The Hawkins family still has the original homestead papers signed by President James Buchanan.

The memories are many for 93-year-old Ova Evans. Her mother died when she was 9. She had five successful home births. Her hands used to crack and bleed in the wintertime while doing the wash by hand with lye soap. Her father nicknamed her "Slim." All her memories were made in Faulkner County.

For Conway High School junior Paul Knipscheer, the year 2000 equals change. Next year, he will attend college, the nation will elect a new president, and "inadequate computer systems will make time travel possible, setting their systems to year 1900," he said.
