Updated: I-40 closure at Mayflower not necessary

It was first reported this afternoon that east and westbound lanes of I-40 would be temporarily closed at Mayflower at 6 p.m. today near mile marker 137, east of the Mayflower interchange, so that Entergy could fix downed power lines. The latest update is that the closure isn't necessary.

The work is hoped to fix downed lines along Highway 365, not over I-40. "Somehow those stayed up," Danny Straessle, AHTD assistant public information officer, said, "but the fear is that when they lift these lines up off Highway 365 that would impact the tension on the lines over I-40 and that could cause them to drop."

However, Entergy reported at about 3:45 that workers had figured out how to fix the lines on 365 without risk of dropping the lines over I-40.
